JR was brought up in Semblester, on the Westside of the
Shetland mainland, and comes from a large musical family
of 10 children.
JR began playing violin at the age of 11, but it was not
long until he diverted to traditional fiddle lessons.
In 1985, along with nephew Andrew Deyell, he had the honour
of playing for Prince Charles and Princess Diana at the
launching of the new Aith lifeboat.
He has played with various groups including The Shetland
Fiddlers Society , and the Westside Fiddle and Accordion
club, but his first band was folk group "Eart Kyent" consisting
of brothers Tom and Colin Deyell, cousin John Philip Johnson
and Raymond Moar. They played mostly at local dances and
pubs, but occasionally travelled abroad to international
festivals. |
